Hello! The new feature allowing custom groupings for public channels is great! But we plan to have lots of channels for people themselves to decide on the multiple activities on a volunteer basis. So is it possible to provide a default grouping that is immediately active so new users aren’t immediately lost in a sea of public channels? Also, is it possible to disable user rearrangement of these provided channels?

I think that you may find some of the solutions your looking for from the Mattermost Welcome Bot Plugin, which describes itself as “a Welcome Bot that helps add new team members to channels.”
With the Mattermost Welcome Bot, you will be able to give all new users custom options to choose from, such as their department, and then based on their selection(s) it will add them to the proper channels automatically.
